How do you save a tree? First name it, then tell a real story.
First, I am an urban forester and arborist. I'm the former City Forester for Providence, Rhode Island, with three decades of experience in the profession. As Past President of the Urban & Community Forestry Society, I'm very proud to have received the Award of Achievement and Life Membership. Through my work I've come to know how much trees inspire people. Trees create a sense of place, hold shared memories, offer communal meaning, and shape how we experience the world. They are living witnesses to the past. Now I enjoy researching and telling stories about famous trees, or bringing lesser known trees to light. The show is about trees for sure, but even more about community and history. I'm endlessly surprised by the depth of pride and passion people have for their old trees, these sentinels of culture. I'm over the moon to be an arborist and amateur historian at the same time. Join me to find the stories with This Old Tree. Together, we'll uncover the tales of heritage trees around the world and meet the people who love them. - Doug |
